Ashitaba is a native plant of the Izu Islands chain, a group of volcanic islands extending south and east of the Izu Peninsula, Japan. The leaves have been eaten as food and medicine for decades. Before 150 years ago, the islands were very isolated and two of them were used to set up internal exiles. They were engaged in laborious, forced labor. To help their never-ending endurance, they ate this plant everyday, because locals and exiles knew of the strong tonic effects of Ashitaba.

The abundant golden sap of the stalks produces a potent store of 20 distinct flavonoids called chalcones. Many studies have shown that Ashitaba Chalcones, in particular 4-hydroxyderricin and xanthoangelol, increase the production of Adiponectin in our body.

Adiponectin is a protein hormone that modulates the regulation of glucose and fatty acid oxidation. This hormone is secreted primarily from the adipose tissue to the bloodstream. One of the impressive benefits of adiponectin is a decrease in abdominal fat.
